Why don’t sleep on your stomach? Many of you might be thinking about this in your mind. And we are going to clear off your doubt both scientifically and from the Islamic point of view.
Once there occurred an incident in the life of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ (P.B.U.H), in which he said on one occasion when he saw an individual lying on the ground whose name Ya’ish Bin Tihkfah. He was lying on the ground on his stomach.
On seeing this, Prophet Muhammed ﷺ (P.B.U.H) came near him and nudged him with his foot. When he woke up and he looked at the Prophet ﷺ, he told him that, “this is the method of lying which God hates”. Means Allah hates laying on one’s stomach.
However, Most people commonly like to sleep on their stomachs, and they say they are more comfortable doing so. Well, why is it advised that you don’t sleep on Your Stomach?
Why Don’t Sleep On Your Stomach? Islamic and Scientific Explanation
Prophet Muhammed ﷺ (P.B.U.H) Said that “God hates it, Dislikes it, Better you don’t do it.”
Once there published an issue of Time Magazine, which was dedicated to the topic, “Latest developments in spinal surgery.” They were showing the latest medical hardware used and how they dealt with the problems of slipped discs and crushed discs. Even they showed the picture of different operations they were doing on people they cut open.
In the end, they had come up with a list of doctors’ recommendations to avoid spinal problems. Number one on the list was, “Don’t sleep on your stomach.”
And they did give all explanations as to why don’t sleep on your stomach?
The body structure of our spine or the backbone is the heaviest one in our whole body. When you sleep on your stomach, everything which comes below it is soft tissue and soft organs, like our intestines, lungs, and stomach, all of which are weak organs.
What happened here is, due to the gravitational pull, the spine sags downwards. And this is what contributes to what they call “lumbar curvature of the spine.” Hence, scientifically proving that, sleeping on your stomach is not a healthy practice.
This is a scientific fact that you can’t even imagine 1400 years ago, when Prophet Muhammed ﷺ (P.B.U.H) advised us, “not to sleep on your stomach because Allah hates it”
And over these 1400 years, they benefited from this practice, and those people who didn’t do it were harmed in one way or other. This is how we should approach the things which Allah (SWT) has prohibited and disliked. It is better not to do it. Because there is harm in it, even if you can’t notice any.
Sleep On Stomach Cause Crib Death Or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
In 1989, I noticed an article which appeared in British newspapers stating that, medical scientists studying a particular illness which seemed to be affecting small children of the age 1-year-old, 2-year-old, or 3-year-old. Parents of these kids put them to sleep in their cribs, and they died in their sleep. They call it as crib death or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Different names were given to it, but they didn’t know why and what was causing such deaths.
To find the cause, Medical researchers did some statistical studies.
They sent out researchers to people whose children had died. And they gathered up information on the circumstances of the incident. Like what type of beds they put them on, what was the temperature of the rooms, and anything they could think of that was related to the circumstance in which the child went to sleep. Expecting they might figure out a common factor which may be the danger factor causing the deaths.
They fed these stuff into computers and correlated the results. What they found as the cause of the issue was, “children were put to sleep on their stomachs”, After they found this, they made a major announcement across England’s leading front-page news, “Doctors Warned: Parents should not put their children to sleep on their stomachs”.
Anyways, the point here is that 7 years later in 1996, the researchers after making it a standard part to advise the parents who bring the children to hospitals that, not to leave your kids to sleep on their stomachs. And with this countrywide campaign to make this known by every parent, they found that after 7 years, the rate of cot death had dropped by 68%.
Now that you know the scientific reasons co-relating to what Islam advice, on why you should not sleep on your stomach.
